Now that the summer is here more and more children are involved in bike riding. Most children have the opportunity to ride their bicycles outside and it is a great form of exercise and can be a great experience for most children. Some children however have unfortunate side effects from bike riding because they did not wear a bike helmet, or they wore an inappropriate bike helmet. Bike helmets have been created so that when a child receives any type of impact to their head they will not suffer as much trauma as they would if they had not been wearing their helmet.

The helmets are specially designed for children based upon their age so it is important that you take the time to research the helmets before you buy them. It would not be a wise idea to buy a bigger helmet so that the child can grow into it in time. Helmets are not like pants or shirts. If the helmet does not fit properly than a new one must be found. Parents must follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to make certain that the helmet fits properly. Many cities actually require children to wear helmets and they have the ability to find the parents if the child is caught without a helmet on while riding a bicycle. These laws usually apply to children under the age of 12 years. Many parents unfortunately feel that their children do not need to wear helmets because they did not wear helmets when they were younger. That may be true but the technology and education was not available back then. The bottom line is this. Children need to get that exercise and riding a bicycle provides a great deal of spatial awareness and kinesthetic learning.

When children are first learning how to ride a bike they are obviously more likely to fall off and injure themselves so do all that you can to protect your child from a serious brain injury. The chance of a child getting hit by a vehicle has also increased due to the texting and talking on cell phones that so many people engage in while driving their vehicles. A child’s head is like an egg shell and once it is cracked it is very hard to put back together.
